Producer & Origin Story
Nabusimake, meaning “the place where the sun rises” in the native Arhuaco language, is a sacred community nestled in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta—a region rich in nature, culture, and peace. These mountains have sustained generations of indigenous farmers whose traditions are deeply tied to the land and its rhythms.
Here, the Comunidad de Nabusimake cultivates Typica, one of Colombia’s oldest and most traditional coffee varieties. The farming methods remain organic and respectful of ancestral practices, passed down through families for centuries.
Among the community’s leaders is Oliverio Villafaña, an indigenous farmer who left his homeland to study agronomy before returning with new knowledge to strengthen sustainable coffee farming in his community. His work bridges ancient wisdom and modern innovation, ensuring that Nabusimake’s coffee continues to thrive while honoring its roots.
Farming & Processing Practices
-
Cultivation: The Typica trees are grown organically under natural shade, without chemical inputs, preserving soil fertility and biodiversity.
-
Processing: The coffee is washed, a traditional Colombian method that enhances clarity and brightness. After careful handpicking, cherries are depulped, fermented, washed, and sun-dried on raised beds.
-
Sustainability: Every step reflects the community’s harmony with nature—the same principles that guide their cultural and spiritual lives.
Quality & Cup Characteristics
-
Cup Profile: Expect a clean, elegant cup with bright acidity, gentle floral notes, and subtle honey sweetness, typical of Typica cultivated at high altitude.
-
Body & Balance: Silky body with refined balance and a long, delicate finish.
-
Ideal For: Filter brewing, where its clarity and complexity can truly shine.
