About Kenya Coffee

Githaka Estate is located in Thika, which is part of Kiambu but technically located in Murang’a County. The estate, owned by the Ngugi Family, has 67 hectares under coffee and produces over 600 metric tons of cherries annually. The farm, with deep red volcanic soils, benefits from approximately 1,000-1,100 mm of rainfall per annum. The ripening cherries are hand-picked and taken to the wet mill for processing, ensuring the removal of underipes, overipes, and any foreign objects before pulping.

The Githaka Estate, owned by the Ngugi Family, spans 67 hectares and primarily cultivates coffee. The farm has been in the Ngugi family since 1966 and is currently managed by the second generation of Ngugis. The estate yields over 600 metric tons of cherries annually and benefits from red volcanic soils and an annual rainfall of 1,000-1,100 mm.

Harvesting involves close monitoring of ripening, with the primary harvest occurring between October and December. Ripe cherries are handpicked early in the morning, inspected at the wet mill, and then packed for shipment.
